Chapter 14 Commentary

  • Most of the time if a kid does not want to read it is for a reason, and it is important to figure out what that reason is. Just by listening to a kid tell you exactly what he is interested in by asking the simple question of "If you had to read anything, what would it be and why" Sometimes kids are simply not exposed to literature at home or outside of the classroom which then leads me to suggestion number four
  • TAKE STUDENTs TO THE LIBRARY!!- When I was a kid and I ever had free time I would love going to the library and racking up my AR points(accelerated reader). I loved just browsing around at all of thedifferent books that were available and there was one spot in particular that I loved to sit and read in because there was a window with natural light. Sometimes kids do not know what is it out there and the library and librarian are a great way to get them thinking about literature and allow them to check out books and take them home.
  • Creat a good book box-Although I have never heard of doing this, I think it is a fantastic idea. I would have loved to have had one of these in my classroom or in the library when I went to visit. Great idea. Good books are what make students want to continue reading and find more good books.
  • Know your students interests-You have to know what they like to find a book that they are going to want to read and be interested. If they look fantasy books about magic and witches and goblins, and you hand them The boxcar children, my guess is they are going to not like that choice and it will just push them to not want to read even more. Have an interest checklist to give them that lets them check what they like to read about and what they dont like to read about.
